Looking around for likely participants, Lloyd and Hardie picked a team that comprised Rowan Atkinson, Christopher Godwin, John Gorman, Chris Langham, Willoughby Goddard and Jonathan Hyde, and duly embarked upon recording the first edition of Not The Nine O'Clock News (directed by Bob Spiers)
The revised shows worked well, and the first series of Not The Nine O'Clock News - it was scheduled opposite the Nine O'Clock News on BBC1 - drew just about enough viewers to gain a second run
These four then became the team of Not The Nine O'Clock News , the most talked-about comedy quartet in Britain for the next three years
In 1982 - after the team mounted a Not The Nine O'Clock News stage show in Oxford and London - the quartet decided, amicably, to call it a day, figuring that they had exploited the format for all it was worth and that it was time to move on to other, individual projects
