CNN.com - Girl in Pledge case won't hear arguments - Mar. 2, 2004
[CNN]
SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- The girl at the center of a constitutional challenge to reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools won't be able to watch her father argue the case before the Supreme Court, a California judge has ruled
But the judge said that a custody dispute involving the girl would be discussed before the high court and that it would be inappropriate for her to hear those arguments
'It would be dangerous and not good for the child, ' Sacramento County Superior Court Judge James Mize said

Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in June 2002 that the Pledge of Allegiance was unconstitutional when recited in public schools because of the words 'under God.' Newdow, a doctor and lawyer, sued on behalf of the girl, who is now a fourth grader in Elk Grove
Banning, who will be represented in the Supreme Court case by Washington lawyer Kenneth Starr, maintains that her daughter does not mind reciting the pledge

(June 15, 2006, Sacramento, CA) The Sacramento County Superior Court has ruled that the California Department of Social Services must immediately restore adoption assistance benefits to nine special needs children in Humboldt County whose benefits were abruptly reduced just days before Christmas 2004
National and state experts on the mental health needs of foster children today asked the Washington Supreme Court to review lower court decisions that allow judges to incarcerate children as punishment for running away from foster placements
On March 14, 2006, the federal district court in Los Angeles ordered the state of California to provide mental health services that will enable tens of thousands of foster children to avoid institutional care
Recent editorials: Ask about the state of foster care in California these days, and many -- from the state Capitol, to the courts, to the counties -- will say the same thing: "The time for reform is now." When foster children are moved from one home to the next, with no one adult to monitor their success or failure, a college education can easily be overshadowed by basic necessities
