  • Precious Metal Clay Rio Grande An Introduction to the Material, Tools and Techniques of Working with Precious Metal Clay What is PMC? Precious Metal Clay represents a dramatic development in the handling of precious metals

  • PMC consists of microscopic particles of silver or gold suspended in an organic binder to create a pliable material with a consistency similar to modeling clay

  • History Precious Metal Clay was developed by scientists working at the Mitsubishi Materials Special Products division in Sanda, Japan

  • Objects made of PMC+ can go from clay to metal in as little as 10 minutes

  • In addition to your own discoveries you might find these useful: tweezers tissue blade magnifiers stiff flat brush (for smoothing) rubber stamps texture plates small chisels playing cards (spacers for thickness) files manicure sanding boards plastic design templates blacking patina solution Basic Techniques Put a few drops of olive oil on your palms before starting; this will help keep the clay moist

  • Another way is to cut a crescent in the edge of the piece and press a ball of clay into that space

  • Most work is done with moist clay but it is also possible to work with PMC after is has dried

An article and previous discussion by people interested in this medium.

  • precious metal clay updated tue 24 may 05 Barbara Sansing on tue 30 apr 96 Precious Metal Clay is certainly precious even if it is not clay

  • For those of you who were not fortunate enough to see the presentation at NCECA, PMC is actually granular metal (silver, gold or platinum) in a clay-like base

  • The actual weight combined with the 'clay' is about 4 ounces, or a disc of about 2' in diameter by 1/2' thick

  • It was then that I discovered that this substance was not as clay-like as I'd hoped

  • Although it dried and cracked not unlike a porcelain-type clay, it was easily repaired and regenerated with water, as clay would be

  • I finally reworked the clay into a small slab

  • This prohibited the kind of daring I would ordinarily take with clay

  • With a budget large enough to allow the same type of experimentation that my journey into clay has been, I feel certain that I might be able to produce some exciting work

  • However, I will set this new material aside for the time being in favor of my continuing sojurn into natural clay

  • I'll be glad to answer any questions regarding Precious Metal Clay

By Baroness Cynthia du Pré Argent. Describes the process involved in making a

  • About Precious Metal Clay (PMC) Precious Metal Clay is micro fine silver (or gold or platinum) that'smixed with an organic claylike matrix which fires away

  • You manipulateit just like pottery clay, except on a smaller scale, and can make jewelry

  • How These Were Made The heart was made with standard hand-building techniques -- a slabof clay, cut into a heart, with tiny 'snakes' to make the seablatt (onetype of stylized heraldic leaf; see the background pattern) cutout andthe curliques

  • The medallion was made by cutting a slab of clay in a circle, and thendrawing the pattern into the clay with a tool

  • The basic slab was made by rolling the clay out like cookie dough, butbetween two stacks of five common playing cards to keep the depth even
