This lack of understanding is the source of many of the hoax theories
Rather than finding out how this equipment worked, many hoax proponents prefer to take a poor guess at how they think it might have worked, and then show how their own guess wouldn't work

Fox TV and the Apollo Moon Hoax
Page rebutting the Fox TV documentary that claimed Moon landings were faked.
Fox TV and the Apollo Moon Hoax (February 13, 2001) On Thursday, February 15th 2001 (and replayed on March 19), the Fox TV network aired a program called ``Conspiracy Theory: Did We Land on the Moon?'', hosted by X-Files actor Mitch Pileggi
The biggest voice in this is Bill Kaysing, who claims to have all sorts of hoax evidence, including pictures taken by the astronauts, engineering details, discussions of physics and even some testimony by astronauts themselves
In the near future, hopefully by the end of the summer, I will have a much more detailed series of pages taking on each of the points made by the Hoax Believers (whom I will call HBs)
And if it was a mistake caused by a breeze on the set where they faked this whole thing, don't you think the director would have tried for a second take? With all the money going to the hoax, they could afford the film! Note added March 28, 2001: One more thing
Another site linking here is , a rather typical hoax and conspiracy site that calls me ``an annoyed scientist'' (true enough) and says that people call me a ``weapon for science''
This is hardly evidence of a hoax

The Moon Hoax Debate
A Debunking of the Moon Hoax Theory.
DID WE LAND ON THE MOON? A Debunking of the Moon Hoax Theory On February 15, 2001 the FOX television network aired a program titled Conspiracy Theory: Did We Land On The Moon? This program showed alleged evidence that NASA faked the moon landings
This hoax theory has been around for several years, but this is the first time it has been presented to such a wide audience
This TV program capitalizes on America's fixation with government conspiracies by sensationalizing the notion that NASA perpetrated a multi-billion dollar hoax on the world
Some of the most prominent advocates of the hoax theory are Bill Kaysing, author of We Never Went To The Moon , Ralph Rene, author of NASA Mooned America , David Percy and Mary Bennett, co-authors of Dark Moon: Apollo and the Whistle Blowers and, more recently, Bart Sibrel, producer of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Moon
These people, and other hoax advocates, usually point to alleged anomalies in the Apollo photo and video record as evidence of their claims
Below are my comments refuting both the evidence presented in the TV program and many other common hoax allegations

NON-FAKED MOON LANDINGS ! Fox aired a special on the moonlanding hoax on Thursday night, February 15, 2001
Everything fits together far too well to be a fake as some of the hoax proponents such as Mr
Tell them that their work was some elaborate hoax
Once the US realized that they couldn't send a man to the moon, they couldn't just say, 'OK Russia, we give up.' And the Russians are going to roll over and go along with the hoax? It would have been fairly easy to discredit the Apollo missions in real-time if they were truly being faked so that an embarrased Soviet government would be able to expose it rather than decide to cover up their own failed attempts to get to the Moon

Comments on the FOX Moonlanding Hoax special FOX Special - 'Conspiracy Theory: DID WE LAND ON THE MOON?' Fox aired a special on the moonlanding hoax on Thursday night, February 15, 2001 at 9:00PM ET (8:00PM PT)
The program claims to 'Let the viewer decide for themselves' about whether there was a hoax or not, but fails to present a balanced program of pro and anti hoax, giving the viewers a highly biased pro-hoax set of evidence on which to base their conclusions
Jim Scotti, 2001 May 7 For a more detailed rebuttal of a typical 'The Moonlandings were Faked' website, First, the lineup: Pro Hoax Bill Kaysing, 'Moon Hoax Investigator' Brian O'Leary, 'NASA astronaut' (..candidate, but I nitpick..) Paul Lazarus, 'Producer, Capricorn One' Ralph Rene, 'Author/Scientist' David Percy, 'Royal Photographic Society' - photographic 'expert' Bart Sibrel, 'Investigative Journalist' Jan Lundberg, 'Project Engineer, Hasselblad' Scott Grissom, son of Gus and Betty Grissom, wife, thinks accident was murder
Anti Hoax: Brian Welch, 'NASA spokesman' Howard McCurdy, 'Space Historian, American University' Julian Scheer, 'Former NASA spokesman' Paul Fjeld, 'NASA LEM Specialist' Claims by Hoax proponents and arguments for the Hoax as presented by FOX: No stars in the images As usual, this was about the first argument used by the Hoax believers to debunk the lunar landing

MOON LANDING HOAX ?
Fake-moon
Examines lunar mission photographs, finds flaws in various claims that they are faked.
As you will see, some of these charges can actually be more easily explained not just by a complete rejection of the Moon Hoax theory, but a combination of conventional explanations and our own "glass ruins" model of the Moon
Yet, in the images that the "Moon Hoaxers" cite, there is consistently only one shadow being cast, indicating that the Sun is (as it should be) the dominant light source
Invariably, the Moon Hoax advocates will compare these lunar images to flat, smooth terrestrial landscapes, like this one below from David Percy
In a sense, the Moon Hoax advocates are correct here; there is no comparison to be made from Lunar landscapes and terrestrial ones
The effect of the sunlight hitting the lunar surface and being reflected back toward the sun itself creates a "backscatter" that fills in the astronaut's bright white shadowed suit with excellent "fill-light." And the fact that the shadow is so dark on the ground in front of him is proof of exactly the opposite of the claim being made by the "Moon Hoaxer" crowd
Interestingly, as to the question of multiple light sources, some of the leading debunkers of the Moon Hoax theory have also made a very significant mistake
The Straight Dope Mailbag: Was the Apollo Moon Landing a Hoax?
Rebuttal of claims that the NASA moon landings were an elaborate hoax.
advertisement: [ | ] From Cecil's Mailbag by the Straight Dope Science Advisory Board Was the Apollo moon landing a hoax? 31-Mar-2000 Dear Straight Dope: I was reading an online story about the anniversary of the first Apollo moon landing and it mentioned that a very few folks maintain, nay, obsessively insist, that it never happened
(In fact, the flat-Earthers are one of the groups claiming the moon landing is a hoax--after all, the astronauts took photos showing a round Earth, and they know that isn't true, so it must be a hoax!) You don't actually expect evidence to convince people like this, do you? Any piece of evidence that we could present would simply be, to them, a part of the conspiracy
was framed by the government for exposing the fake moon landings through his part in this movie! As Peter Huston, the writer and skeptic who mentioned this to me, deadpanned, "Apparently, the government moves slowly on framing its enemies." Bob Mulford, of the Inquiring Skeptics of Upper New York, wrote a short article for the group's newsletter, The WHY-Files , discussing a recent book claiming the whole thing was a hoax
2.09: The Wrong Stuff
Wired published one of the first articles on the web to advance the theory that
we never landed on the moon.
Not very many people on the Apollo project knew about the hoax, as they were only informed on a need-to-know basis
Actually, I'm surprised they aren't more widespread.' Nonetheless, hoax believers can be found in many parts of society, here and abroad
'A distrust of authority clearly plays into this whole thing, ' argues Fred Fedler, who teaches journalism at the University of Central Florida and has written a book on media hoaxes
Degh recalls that it was 'quite a slanderous movie, pretending that the government had been killing people, ' and she believes that it must have given a powerful boost to the moon-landing hoax theory
Mass media have a terrible impact on people who lack guidance.' 007 Uncovers Hoax Peter Hyams, Capricorn One 's director, agrees that mass media can be very powerful - dangerously so, in fact
So I said, wouldn't it be interesting if you took a major event where the only source that people have is a television screen, and you showed how easy it would be to manipulate everybody.' Hyams insists that he made Capricorn One 'for entertainment, for fun, ' not because he was making not-so-veiled references to the alleged Apollo hoax
