Sleepless Society Beyond those with an unintentional inability to sleep, millions more Americans undersleep by choice, burning the candle at both ends because of hectic work and family schedules
Recent surveys show that Americans sleep seven hours each night on average, down from nine hours in 1910, when, without electricity, people generally went to sleep as darkness fell
'People don't respect sleep enough, ' says Daniel O'Hearn, a sleep disorders specialist at Johns Hopkins University
'They feel they can do more--have more time for work and family--by allowing themselves less time for sleep
But they do sleep; they sleep at work, or driving to work.' Nodding off at work isn't just unproductive; in the worst cases, it can cause serious industrial accidents
The 1989 Exxon Valdez Alaskan oil spill, for example, was reportedly due at least in part to the severe fatigue of the tanker's sleep-deprived third mate
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that more than 200, 000 crashes each year involve drivers falling asleep at the wheel, and that thousands of Americans die in such accidents annually
Alcohol and Sleep - Alcohol Alert No. 41-1998
Paper discussing the effects of alcohol on sleep (US National Institute on Alcohol
Abuse and Alcoholism).
41 July 1998 A lcohol and Sleep The average adult sleeps 7.5 to 8 hours every night
Although the function of sleep is unknown, abundant evidence demonstrates that lack of sleep can have serious consequences, including increased risk of depressive disorders, impaired breathing, and heart disease
In addition, excessive daytime sleepiness resulting from sleep disturbance is associated with memory deficits, impaired social and occupational function, and car crashes (1, 2)
Alcohol consumption can induce sleep disorders by disrupting the sequence and duration of sleep states and by altering total sleep time as well as the time required to fall asleep (i.e., sleep latency)
This Alcohol Alert explores the effects of alcohol consumption on sleep patterns, the potential health consequences of alcohol consumption combined with disturbed sleep, and the risk for relapse in those with alcoholism who fail to recover normal sleep patterns
Sleep Structure, Onset, and Arousal Before discussing alcohol's effects on sleep, it is helpful to summarize some basic features of normal sleep
A person goes through two alternating states of sleep, characterized in part by different types of brain electrical activity (i.e., brain waves)

Sleep Disorders
Old (1987) but useful article written by a science writer on contract with the
US National Institute of Mental Health.
Sleep Disorders 1987 Introduction One-third of all adult Americans--about 50 million people--complain about their sleep
Some sleep too little, some fitfully, and some too much
Although one-third of our lives is spent asleep, most of us don't know much about sleep, not even our own
We don't even know exactly why we sleep, other than--like an overnight battery recharge--sleep promotes daytime alertness
Sleep problems profoundly disturb both sleeping and waking life
The Balm Of The Bard Sleep was, for Shakespeare, the 'balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course, chief nourisher in life's feast.' For centuries, science knew little more: sleep was a magical phenomenon
Only then did investigators, using the electroencephalogram (EEG), measure the brain's electrical activity in sleeping subjects
On rivers of graph paper, they could watch the rhythm of activity in the brain during sleep
Instead of being a quiet and peaceful period of rest and recuperation, as most of us think of it, sleep is a very complex, dynamic activity
Your body may be the picture of tranquillity while you sleep

eMedicine - Insomnia : Article by James A Rowley, MD Article by James Rowley, MD about insomnia, the most common
sleep complaint.
It is a perception that sleep quality is inadequate or nonrestorative, despite the adequate opportunity to sleep
That insomnia is a symptom, not a disease, is important to note; it is associated with a variety of medical, psychiatric, and sleep disorders (see )
The complaint of insomnia encompasses many sleep problems
These include difficulty falling asleep, sleeping too lightly, being easily disrupted with multiple spontaneous awakenings, or early morning awakenings with inability to fall back asleep
On the basis of duration, insomnia is commonly divided into the following 3 types: Transient insomnia lasts up to 1 week and often is referred to as adjustment sleep disorder because it most often is caused by an acute situational stress, such as a new job, upcoming deadline, or exam
Evidence for this theory includes the following: When compared to control subjects, individual with insomnia (1) have higher rates of depression and anxiety, (2) score higher on scales of arousal, (3) have longer daytime sleep latency, (4) have an increased 24-hour metabolic rate, (5) have more night-to-night variability in their sleep, and (6) may have more beta EEG activity (an EEG pattern seen during memory processing/performing tasks) at sleep onset

Sleep Disorders All About Sleep Sleep is necessary for a healthy and balanced life
In today's 24-hour world, many Americans find it difficult to fit sleep into their schedules
Sleepdex is dedicated to raising awareness of sleep issues and encouraging people to take sleep seriously
Most adults need around eight hours of sleep to function well
Although many people claim they require less, doctors who study sleep find only 10% require significantly more or less sleep
Recent findings indicate that the chronic lack of sleep and untreated sleep disorders may be factors in the development of cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes
Scientists believe sleep may be a way of recharging the brain
Sleep appears necessary for our nervous systems to work properly
Too little sleep leaves us drowsy and unable to concentrate the next day
If sleep deprivation continues, hallucinations and mood swings may develop
Some experts believe sleep gives neurons used while we are awake a chance to shut down and repair themselves
Without sleep, neurons may become so depleted in energy or so polluted with byproducts of normal cellular activities that they begin to malfunction

What can I do to get more rest? A: Lack of sleep, or insomnia, is one of the most significant health problems facing Americans
Most adults require 7-8 hours of sleep per night, and one's ability to function at work or behind the wheel of a vehicle, or to fend off and recover from illness, are all affected by sleep deficits
Over the course of several days, record not only the number of hours you sleep, but also the quality and quantity of your sleep -- for example, do you sleep straight through, have frequent wakeful periods, awaken short of breath or get up often to go to the bathroom? Also make a list of all the medications you are taking (both prescription and non-prescription) to bring with you when you visit your doctor
Assuming that there are no major stressors and that you are not experiencing significant depressive or anxiety, there are several steps that can lead to a better night's sleep: Set a regular schedule for sleep, with a heavy emphasis on stable bedtime routines
LACK OF SLEEP ?
Quitting Oxazepam (Serax) - personal experience with withdrawal
Personal experience with quitting Oxazepam (Serax).
Somehow my sleeping pattern got mixed up and after a few days I couldn't sleep during the night
However, my main problem was: lack of sleep and a wrong sleeping pattern
So after reading some information on the world wide web regarding the use of Oxazepam for sleeping problems, I decided to start with 20mg about 30 minutes before going to bed
In the evening I tried to sleep but now only on 10mg since I really wanted to stop, using the 10 tablets only
Sleep problems Even after 7 months I still suffered from a very odd sleeping pattern
It might be possible that my sleep pattern has become a habbit on its own
I doubt that the sleeping problems are caused by my depression, since before I started with Oxazepam, I rarely had any problems at all
In my personal experience, after three times 10 mg (total 30mg) I should have taken 20mg 30 minutes before sleep (total 20mg) for several days and then 10mg 30 minutes before sleep (total 10mg) for several days
Current situation At this moment I have no more sleeping problems
After about 8 months of stopping with Oxazepam my sleeping pattern became normal again

Lack of sleep may also contribute to obesity
Recent studies suggest that people with sleep problems may gain weight over time
On the other hand, obesity may contribute to sleep problems due to medical conditions such as sleep apnea, where a person briefly stops breathing at multiple times during the night
(Visit for more information on the relationship between sleep apnea and obesity.) You may wish to talk with your health care provider if you have difficulty sleeping

I inadvertantly turn it off in my sleep when it begins to beep, mistaking it for an alarm clock
I inadvertantly take it off in my sleep when it beeps
I can't sleep on my stomach or side, or the headband slips off
Yes, it does wake me up consistently (and I often wake up crankier due to lack of sleep) and I learn to just grind at the lowest beep, then stop when it gets loud, then repeat the cycle
Quick 06-25-2003 on This just doesn't sound like it would promote a good night's sleep
So here we have a device that has a good chance of leaving you sleep deprived which I have to believe will not reduce your stress and anxiety levels
I keep getting a picture of using the thing, which results in poor sleep, which raises your stress, which makes you grind more, ...repeat..
Just my 2 cents, -Quick BruxQ January 16, 2003 on I've been grinding my teeth in my sleep for the last 6 years or so--every night now
