How does it work ? This is just a straightforward application of the Gaussian Beam formalism (a.k.a

We describe the concept of a colliding beam fusion reactor (CBFR) (), which in principle solves the three problems of size, neutrons, and maintenance
These experiments involved the injection of energetic beams (about 50 keV) in order to heat the plasma in the large Tokamak experiments () at Princeton, General Atomic, and the Joint European Torus in England
The energetic beam ion density was about 1% of the density and 10 to 100 times the mean energy of the ions of the thermal plasma
The density of the injected beam in Tokamaks was increased
It was found that there is a threshold beam density above which the beam drives Alfvén modes in the background plasma; these long-wavelength modes cause anomalous beam transport ()

Monkhorst () revisit several ideas--the use of the reactions of protons with boron-11 (p- 11 B) to produce fusion energy, () the use of the field-reversed configuration (FRC) for magnetic confinement of particles and energy ( E ) (), and the use of nonthermal ion distributions to enhance the fusion reactivity ()--in their proposal for a colliding beam fusion reactor (CBFR)
The fundamental difficulty with nonthermal ions is apparent when one compares the fusion cross section ( fusion 1 barn for p- 11 B at E cm = 580 keV, where E cm is the energy in the center-of-mass frame) to the effective cross section for many small-angle Coulomb scattering events that combine to produce a scattering angle of 90° rms in an incident beam ( eff 60 barns for protons scattering on 11 B at E cm = 580 keV)
Highly nonthermal systems, like the colliding beam reactor proposed by Rostoker et al
Maintaining E cm = 580 keV would require that the boron beam velocity be u B 1.1 × 10 9 cm/s

'Spruce' the Hopwas Beam Engine 'Spruce' is one of two 50HP 'housebuilt' single cylinder, condensing, rotative water pumping beam engines and was donated to Forncett Museum by the South Staffordshire Water Company - the other - 'Woody' went to Leicester - where these engines were built by Gimson and Co
The pumps located 260 feet down the well were driven by 18" square pitch pine rods, joined to two yokes off the crank end of the beam which pass round the crankshaft in two loops, each engine was capable of moving half a million gallons of water a day
