  • An express warning against ignoble panic was indeed uttered by Jeremias in the words: 'Be not afraid of the signs of heaven which the heavens fear', (x, 2)

  • ASTRONOMICAL ALLUSIONS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT The 'host of heaven', a frequently recurring Scriptural expression, has both a general and a specific meaning

  • He recognizes in Mazzaroth the planet Venus in her double aspect of morning and evening star, pointing out that the luminary designated in the Book of Kings, with the sun and moon, and the 'host of heaven' must evidently be next in brightness to the chief light-givers

  • Further, the sun, moon, and Venus constitute the great astronomical triad of Babylonia, the sculptured representations of which frequently include the 'host of heaven' typified by a crowd of fantastic animal-divinities

    William Blake
Biography of the British poet and mystic and discussion of his works.

  • To see a world in a grain of sand And heaven in a wild flower Hold infinity in the palm of your hand And eternity in an hour

  • In 1790 Blake engraved THE MARRIAGE OF HEAVEN AND HELL, a book of paradoxical aphorisms and his principal prose work

  • "If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite." (from The Marriage of Heaven and Hell ) The work expressed Blake's revolt against the established values of his time: "Prisons are built with stones of Law, brothels with bricks of Religion." Radically he sided with the Satan in Milton's Paradise Lost and attacked the conventional religious views in a series of aphorisms

Comments on the Tao Te Ching
Translational information and comparison, based on DC Lau's translation.

  • Chapter V Verse 14: 'Heaven and earth are ruthless...' Although Taoism sometimes sounds very pacifistic, it is possible to wage war on Taoist principles; and here it is recognized that nature, and so the Tao , is not always kind

  • Hall in their 'philosophical translation' apparently don't like the implications of this, so they translate it as, 'The heavens and the earth are not partial to institutionalized morality' [p.84]

  • Verse 58: 'Heaven on the way.' The only place where the yin imagery of the Tao gives way to a yang image: Heaven is very much a yang thing, and it is subordinate to the Tao , but here it subordinates earth, which might be thought the supreme yin thing short of the Tao

  • Evidently, the Chinese regard for Heaven was too much even for Taoism

  • Chapter XXXII Verse 72: 'Heaven and earth will unite and sweet dew will fall.' A hint that miraculous effects might be expected from Not Doing: Nature will even produce good weather if we are in harmony with the Tao

  • In so doing I gain in goodness...' Compare to Jesus at Matthew 5:44-45: 'But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rains on the just and on the unjust.' Chapter LII Verse 119: 'To hold fast to the submissive [ róu ] is called strength.' Chapter LVI Verse 128: 'One who knows does not speak; one who speaks does not know.' Probably the most famous line in the Tao Te Ching , though the authors have done an awful lot of speaking if they are supposed to be ones who know

The Problem of Suffering: Some Reflections from Job
Questions and contemplations provoked by the suffering of the biblical hero.

  • The Problem of Suffering: Some Reflections from Job 1-2 Prologue 1:1-5 Introducing Job on earth: Job rich and pious 1:6-12 first assembly in heaven: Satan given permission to take things away 1:13-22 first test on earth: Job loses animals, servants, and children 2:1-6 second assembly in heaven: Satan given permission to touch his life 2:7-10 second test on earth: Job has sores; his wife turns on him

  • The sufferer needs/desires a mediator in dealing with the power differential (9:33-35 [there is no umpire between us {God and Job}, who might lay his hand on us both]; 16:18-22 [my witness is in heaven and the one that vouches for me on high]; 19:25-27 [I know that my 'redeemer' is alive...and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God])

  • » » 's 'Days of Heaven'' has been praised for its painterly images and evocative score, but criticized for its muted emotions: Although passions erupt in a deadly love triangle, all the feelings are somehow held at arm's length

  • 'Days of Heaven'' is above all one of the most beautiful films ever made

  • The days of heaven are over

  • They were probably calling for help or something--or they were trying to bury somebody or something.'' That is the voice of the person who tells the story, and that it why 'Days of Heaven'' is correct to present its romantic triangle obliquely, as if seen through an emotional filter

  • Children know that adults can be seized with sudden passions for one another, but children are concerned primarily with how these passions affect themselves: Am I more or less secure, more or less loved, because there has been this emotional realignment among the adults who form my world? Since it was first released, 'Days of Heaven'' has gathered legends to itself

    The Gospel of Jesus Christ
Describes sin's consequences, but explains how an individual can escape the
    penalty of sin.

  • However, God does not weigh our good (good works) versus our bad (sin) on a balance scale, to decide weither or not we go to heaven or hell

  • Man has tried to follow strict laws in order to get into heaven

  • God is your creator and is sovereign over all things in heaven and on earth

  • This eternal life with God is called heaven

  • “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5) The only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ

  • “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6) “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name (Jesus) under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12) 8) What does “In Christ Jesus our LORD ” mean? To have Jesus as your Lord you have to have a one on one personal relationship with Him

Commentary on the Book of Job
    by Fr. William Most.

  • Children, precisely because they are children, have a claim to be in their Father's house, which is heaven

  • 2)So we have a *claim* to go to our Father's house.A claim can be called a merit.Yet it is a different kind of merit.Although it is as it were a ticket to heaven, it is a ticket we get for free, without at all earning it

  • b)Just as a really good Father trains His children by discipline to make them grow up and be what they should be, so our Father in heaven, disciplines us for the same purpose, as we said above, citing Hebrews and Proverbs

  • pictures the wicked as trying in vain to hide in Sheol, in Heaven, on Mt.Carmel or on the bottom of the sea
