TAPE TRADING 6
LEGALITIES CONCERNING TAPE TRADING I have put this here first because so many people are confused about this issue
It states: 'Sale of home videotape recorded held not to constitute contributory infringement of television program copyrights
It was held that the sale of home video tape recorders to the general public did not constitute contributory infringement of copyrights on television programs since there was a significant likelihood that substantial numbers of copyright holders who license their works for broadcast on free [or cable] television would not object to having their broadcasts time-shifted by private viewers and the plaintiff copyright holders did not demonstrate time-shifting would cause any likelihood of non-minimal harm to the potential market for, or the value of, copyrighted works.' (Guide to American Law, volume 3, 1983 p 46-7) All this means is it is LEGAL to tape television programs off the air and that no legal prosecution can happen to manufacturers of video cassette recorders and blank tape as well as the 'Home Use' consumer

Tips and tricks for digital video productions with emphasis on the DV format.
Recent Updates 2004.02.05 DV Stuff Recovering from DV mistracking errors: Occasionally you'll geta tape that won't play back properly, showing blocking or checkerboardingin bands across the picture and/or towards one edge of the picture
I'venow seen several tapes that won't play back properly in this way, includingone that wouldn't play back correctly in either the Canon XL1 that recordedit nor in a DVCPRO VTR
I've found that most Sony gear will do a prettygood job where other manufacturers have a hard time with such tapes
However, when the really badly mistracked stuff won't play back properly injust any old Sony machine, you can often recover the images in a VTR withDynamic Motion Control capabilities such as the DSR-1600, DSR-1800, or DSR-2000.These will work with any DV25 tape: DV, DVCAM, or D-7
The DSR-2000 willeven recover mistracked LP DV tapes some of the time
DVCAM tapes can be used in DV recorders and vice versa
Iused DVCAM tapes in my DHR-1000 when I couldn't get DV tapes longer than60 minutes in my neck of the woods
To suss out what tape you need, takethe DVCAM running time and multiply by 1.5 (since DV uses a 10 micron trackpitch to DVCAM's 15 microns)

recording methods, and equipment reviews.
Safety pins, gaffer's tape, and a custom made cloth loop may be considered to secure the pickups
Shakes and bumps that pose a liability to ruin the recording on MD, DAT tape, or hard drive decks are not a problem with solid state memory flash recorders
Avoid making a BLANK DAT or MD Recording !?! DAT TAPES SELDOM MISLOAD, BUT IT DOES HAPPEN mostly due to a lousy cassette and/or deck's out-of-adjustment transport
One or a combination of reasons for this to happen certainly disappoints the recordist with blank (MAYBE defective?) cassette tape & used batteries for effort/expense
Do a brief (30 SEC) Test recording before the actual recording; then play back the tape while headphone listening (also best way to check for clean-quiet connections) and/or VU watching for proper (playback) operation

CS322: Operating Systems History
A Brief History of Computer Operating Systems from the mid 1950s on.
A sample of several batch jobs might look like: $JOB user_spec ; identify the user for accounting purposes $FORTRAN ; load the FORTRAN compiler source program cards $LOAD ; load the compiled program $RUN ; run the program data cards $EOJ ; end of job $JOB user_spec ; identify a new user $LOAD application $RUN data $EOJ Often magnetic tapes and drums were used to store intermediate data and compiled programs
Since it is faster to read from a magnetic tape than from a deck of cards, it became common for computer centers to have one or more less powerful computers in addition to there main computer
The smaller computers were used to read a decks of cards onto a tape, so that the tape would contain many batch jobs
This tape was then loaded on the main computer and the jobs on the tape were executed
The output from the jobs would be written to another tape which would then be removed and loaded on a less powerful computer to produce any hardcopy or other desired output
Since the computer can now perform IO in parallel with computation, it became possible to have the computer read a deck of cards to a tape, drum or disk and to write out to a tape printer while it was computing
