    Howstuffworks "How Cell Phones Work"
Explains how things and technical processes work.

  • Both people on the call can talk at once

  • Channels - A walkie-talkie typically has one channel, and a CB radio has 40 channels

  • Each cell is typically sized at about 10 square miles (26 square kilometers)

  • That is, each cell (of the seven on a hexagonal grid) is using one-seventh of the available channels so it has a unique set of frequencies and there are no collisions: A cell-phone carrier typically gets 832 radio frequencies to use in a city

  • Each cell phone uses two frequencies per call -- a -- so there are typically 395 voice channels per carrier

  • For example, a TDMA-based digital system can carry three times as many calls as an analog system, so each cell has about 168 channels available (see the section on for lots more information on TDMA, CDMA, GSM and other digital cell-phone techniques)

  • Each carrier in each city also runs one central office called the Mobile Telephone Switching Office (MTSO)

    Cellular Phone Safety Implications
NHTSA research results on the safety implications of cell phone use in automobile
    vehicles.

  • In the two years since the research for this report was initiated, the technology has changed dramatically and what was once a novelty, used primarily by businesses, has now become commonplace among the masses

  • Societal pressures for increased efficiency, more leisure time, and an improved sense of safety, have placed wireless communications at the forefront of potential solutions for an increasingly mobile and technologically sophisticated populace

  • It was inevitable that the reduced size, reduced cost and increased functionality of the cellular telephone would find its use by drivers in vehicles increasing dramatically

  • In addition, the data from the states of Oklahoma and Minnesota, the only two states which attempt to systematically record cellular telephone use prior to a crash, are discussed

  • The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), various manufacturers as well as service providers have specifically focused on safe driving as an important consideration relating to cellular telephone use

  • In addition, manufacturers of cellular accessories have specifically targeted safety in their products

  • Legislative Initiatives While the benefits of cellular telephone use have been frequently called out by both the cellular industry and law enforcement authorities, concern regarding the safety of operating a motor vehicle while using the phone has been of sufficient magnitude that legislative action has sometimes been initiated

Take Charge: Fighting Back Against Identity Theft
Tips from the Federal Trade Commission.

  • How identity thieves use your personal information: They may call your credit card issuer to change the billing address on your credit card account

  • Social Security number : Call the toll-free fraud number of any of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies and place an initial fraud alert on your credit reports

  • The company you call is required to contact the other two, which will place an alert on their versions of your report, too

  • Continue to check your credit reports periodically, especially for the first year after you discover the identity theft, to make sure no new fraudulent activity has occurred

  • Call and speak with someone in the security or fraud department of each company

  • If you don't have Internet access, call the FTC's Identity Theft Hotline, toll-free: 1-877-IDTHEFT (438-4338); TTY: 1-866-653- 4261; or write: Identity Theft Clearinghouse, Federal Trade Commission, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580

  • Be sure to call the Hotline to update your complaint if you have any additional information or problems

  • Don't end the call until you're sure you understand everything you've been told

AAA Foundation - Cell Phone Study
Study conducted by the National Public Services Research Institute on the effects
of cell phone use on drivers.

  • The prospect of twenty million drivers having the opportunity to place, receive, or handle a telephone call while driving is not something easily ignored

  • Each situation occurred equally often under five conditions of distraction: placing a cellular phone call, carrying on a simple cellular phone conversation, carrying on a complex cellular phone conversation, tuning a radio, and no distraction (i.e., none of the preceding)

  • Placing a phone call was no more deleterious than a simple conversation in causing situations to go unnoticed, but delayed responses to about the same degree as did complex calls

  • Relative increase in chances of a highway-traffic situation going unnoticed ranged from approximately 20% for placing a call in simple conversations to 29% for complex conversations

  • Overall, the increase in likelihood that some highway-traffic situation will go unnoticed while calling or conversing on a cellular phone was (for the older group) about twice that of their younger counterparts

  • As far as time to respond is concerned, age only effected the placing of cellular phone calls

  • Older drivers, in particular, should be cautioned against placing calls One of the most popular innovations in automotive travel in the past decade has nothing to do with the automobile itself, the people who drive them, or the roads over which they operate

    Daily Notes
Informative and detailed articles on the telecommunications and wireless industries,
with a large section covering the history of telephone networks.

  • We can get at least three calls on a channel where analog provided only one

  • But what has this to do with digital? One can still understand a caller on an analog signal, even as it falls apart

  • Loose too many bits and the whole call is lost

  • Radio folks call this the bit error rate or BER

  • 'Everyone is fully aware of the difficulty in hearing cell calls clearly when they are in a noisy environment such as a sporting event

  • Very few calls, therefore, could go back and forth

  • to companies such as Excell and InfoNXX, which is all just 'agent services.' Making an international call that is not IDDD is a nightmare

  • I recently had a horrible experience trying to get an IDDD call through to Amsterdam and there was no 'assistance' at all from either AT&T, Qwest or Verizon when it didn't go through

  • There must be some place that handles third and fourth world country calls but who knows or really cares where it is and who operates it anymore? As we've discussed I think before, Qwest does have an agent services office in Tempe (Phoenix) which is in the old TOPS/DA location
