  • Homework" VERONICA MARS is a seventeen year-old who helps her private eye dad solve cases on a new UPN drama scheduled for the 2004-05 schedule

  • Yep, that's right -- despite the promo spot's hints at "grit, " Veronica Mars looked -- particularly at first glance -- suspiciously like a teen soap, along the lines of 90210 or Dawson's Creek , with just a dash of the detective genre tossed in for flavor

  • UNDER OATH " Veronica Mars blows me away each week, with it's bittersweet endings that fit right into the P.I

  • formula." ( ) "Maybe I am a girly man, as my Governator Ahr-Nald might say, but I dig the Veronica Mars TV show

  • What makes this show work for me is not simply that its creator and exec producer, Rob thomas, draws on just enough of that Smallville by way of Dawson's Creek vibe to hook the youth, but the subterranean current flowing underneath the over-arching storyline comes straight from Ross Macdonald." [CNN]

  • PASADENA, California (AP) -- As NASA scientists struggled to revive their ailing Mars rover, they also began to prepare for the landing of its twin, which was scheduled to touch down on the other side of the Red Planet shortly after midnight Saturday

  • Opportunity is the second of a pair of $820 million twin rovers NASA sent to Mars to determine if it was once a wetter world capable of sustaining life

  • The landing site is 45-mile-long ellipse that is one of the smoothest and flattest places on Mars

  • Two teams of engineers Before it started to malfunction, the Spirit rover sent back images of itself on the surface of Mars

  • At the same time engineers dealt with the crisis, Spirit's twin, Opportunity, neared Mars for its own landing Saturday night

  • Spirit began malfunctioning early Wednesday, its 19th day on Mars, transmitting little more than random strings of zeroes and ones, after NASA commanded it to run a motor inside its 5-foot mast

  • Attempts to communicate with Spirit, either directly from Earth or through two National Aeronautics and Space Administration satellites in Mars orbit, have been spotty

  • Not since the 1976 landing of the twin Viking landers has NASA had two working spacecraft on the surface of Mars

  • But it is remarkable that in 1726 the moons of Mars has been described very well by Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) in his book 'Gulliver's Travels'

  • He wrote: They have likewise discovered two lesser stars, or satellites, which revolve about Mars, whereof the innermost is distant from the center of the primary planet exactly three of his diameters, and the outermost five; the former revolves in the space of ten hours, and the latter in twenty-one and a half; so that the squares of their periodical times are very near in the same proportion with the cubes of their distance from the center of Mars, which evidently shows them to be governed by the same law of gravitation that influences the other heavenly bodies

Mariner IV - First Flyby of Mars
Illustrated story of the Mariner IV mission to Mars, by project engineer Bill Momsen.

  • Mariner IV - First Flyby of Mars Some personal experiences Bill Momsen © Copyright 1996-2006

  • This is the story of Mariner IV, the world's first mission to the planet Mars

  • From its blood-red color, the Greeks dubbed it Ares, god of war, whereas the Romans named it Mars

  • However, his concept did not allow for "retrograde motion" (As Earth, moving faster, catches up to and passes Mars, it appears to move backwards for a while before resuming its forward motion)

  • In the late 15th century Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe made a great number of celestial observations, concentrating on Mars

  • Kepler found that the only simple model that would account for Mars' motion was that its orbit was not a circle but an ellipse! Thus was the modern age of astronomy begun

  • Fortunately Keppler had concentrated on Mars, whose orbit is more elliptical than any other planet, or he might not have come to that conclusion

  • (The orbital eccentricity of Mars is .0934

  • In Keppler's time Pluto had not yet been discovered and Mercury was too close to the Sun for precise measurements.) Life on Mars? Although readily seen with the naked eye, it remained for the invention of the telescope circa 1600 to allow scrutiny of its surface
